Established to protect the amazing views offered throughout the region, Acadia as a National Park dates back to the early 1900’s when its first 6000 acres were set aside by Woodrow Wilson in 1913. Established as national park in 1919, it became Acadia National Park in the year 1929. Today, the area has continued its growth and now encompasses over 35,000 acres of stunning coastline, islands, lake and forests and mountains and is one of the most visited parks in the nation with almost 2 million visitors a year.
A picture of our glacial history, the area is rich in evidence of the arrival and departure of ancient glaciers including massive mountains and valleys, lakes and valle7ys as well as massive granite boulders. The history of the natural world may be long; the human history of the area is also quite lengthy as well with evidence of human history in the park dating back over 5,000 years with the first Native American settlers in the region.
In the park, there is plenty of ways to enjoy the area including over 120 miles of hiking trails, over 27 miles of the best examples of historic carriage roads in the U.S. perfect for biking, scenic drives including the 27 mile scenic Park Loop Road, beaches, camping, ranger led tours, guided explorations and the parks museums which provide a look at the diversity of nature and the history of the people who lived here in the past.
Like many national parks, each season presents its own unique and enjoyable experiences however; by far the most popular time to visit Acadia is during the fall where the fall foliage draws millions of leaf peepers from around the country to see some of the finest views in the country.
